Seed protection from birds Simply covering up the grass seeds often prevents birds from eating them. You should have already raked the seed lightly into the soil surface, covering it to a depth of 1/16 to 1/8 inch. Mulches, floating seed covers or fine netting can each provide further protection from birds.
